Life is what is happening all around you,
even as you stand there
waiting for it to happen
on your smart phone.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

Mary of Bethany poured out a container of nard, an extremely expensive perfume, on Jesus’ feet.  It was said that this was worth an entire year’s wages.  But it is highly unlikely back then that a young, unmarried Jewish woman could afford to purchase such a thing.  I believe the Lord told me that this perfume represented her dowry, which was given to her by her father, and which was to be brought to her husband at marriage.

And by pouring this out on Jesus’ feet, she was not only preparing Him for “burial”, she was also giving up all hope and desire for any earthly lover.  From that time forward, Jesus was her portion.

I am not saying anything against marriage.  I have been happily married for 26 years. But in a very real spiritual and heart way, we too are called to forsake all earthly “lovers” and dreams and hopes, and to pour out our lives on Him.
